A couple of years ago, my friend Tara and I made a trip to Tampa Bay, Florida. As part of that trip, we went to Clearwater and St. Petersburg, Florida. The trip was a nice “appetizer” to the area, and I loved it enough that I’m pretty confident that I’ll go back again to visit the areas in more depth. In this post, I’m going to cover a few of the really cool things that we saw, as well as a few that I have on the list for a future trip.
Clearwater Marine Aquarium
This place is a must-see in the area. It’s not your typical aquarium, in that it is also a rescue and rehabilitation nonprofit organization committed to releasing any marine animals that they can. It’s also the home to Winter, a dolphin famous from A Dolphin’s Tale. The programming was educational and was interesting to the children and adults alike.
Dali Museum
This museum is set in St. Petersburg, Florida. We basically stumbled across it while walking along the waterfront. It celebrates the life and work of Salvador Dali. Even if you’re not that interested in Dali’s artwork, I’d recommend at least making a trip to the museum to admire the unique and beautiful architecture of the building itself.
St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market
Every Saturday morning, St. Petersburg has a fantastic market. It has the fruits and vegetables and flowers that you would expect from any farmer’s market. But it also features bakers, food trucks, arts and crafts stalls, live musicians, and just generally a festival atmosphere. We spent hours wandering around and looking at everything, and finished our time at the market with a lunch of fresh bread and strawberries and a walk along the waterfront. It was lovely.
Treasure Island Beach
A trip to the Clearwater/St. Petersburg area of Florida wouldn’t be complete without some beach time. We visited Treasure Island beach, which was perfect for lounging and chatting, and enjoying the sunset.
For next time:
We didn’t get a chance to visit these places, but they looked really interesting to me. I’m looking forward to making them a priority on my next visit to the area.
