My husband is Nebraska born and raised. I’m originally from the Black Hills in South Dakota. Carhenge is a place that I had heard about many times before, but never visited. My husband had been to Carhenge several times previously.
Carhenge is located near Alliance, Nebraska. It was built by Jim Reinders in 1987. It is made from several old cars, stuck into the ground at various angles as well as stacked and welded, to be reminiscent of Stonehenge in the United Kingdom. The cars are covered in gray spray paint, but there is a fair amount of graffiti as well. I suppose the graffiti is inevitable, with the secluded nature of the site.
I really enjoyed wandering through Carhenge. I’m a car buff, so it was neat to see all of the vintage automobiles. And having previously been to Stonehenge, I enjoyed the modern American ode to the ancient site. I think Carhenge is worth a stop, or even a detour to visit. It was a nice break on our road trip back from the Black Hills! And even Emmy, our Corgi, liked walking there!
